One Direction's Liam Payne says everyone makes mistakes. Charles Poladian

One Direction fans came together in a collective “aw” Saturday when 20-year-old Liam Payne member wrote a Twitter apology for a recent video in which the boys smoked marijuana.

“I love my boys and maybe things have gone a little sideways I apologise for that,” he wrote. “We are only in our 20's we all do stupid things at this age. We all have a lot of growing up to do in an extreme circumstance I'm not making excuse but it's fact we are gunna [sic] fall short somewhere. Hopefully we stand the test of time an get it right in the end I don't take this for granted and I’m extremely grateful to be here doing this. Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us through this just know that we love you guys for it and it means the world.”

The internet naturally exploded upon seeing his apology. The hashtag #ThankYouLiam was trending on twitter and was used in more than 102,000 tweets in just three hours.

Even Piers Morgan responded, saying: “Well said @Real_Liam_Payne - you're good lads and will learn from mistakes. Ps but I'll always be better at football than you.”

Payne was not present in the supposedly leaked video that shows band members Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson smoking marijuana. Tomlinson is heard saying “So here we are, leaving Peru. Joint lit. Happy days!”

Tomlinson and Malik have brought in lawyers and plan to take legal action against the person they say stole and leaked the video.
