Lindsay Lohan may be facing years in jail if she is convicted of felony and theft after allegedly stealing a $2,500 (£1,552) necklace from a California jewellery store, it has been reported.

The star could be charged as early as this Monday according to Lohan's lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley, reports TMZ.com. Earlier reports suggested that she might escape prosecution after the Kamofie & Company store waited too long before reporting the incident. The actress was photographed wearing the gold necklace and it was after this that the store filed a complaint against her.

In a statement her lawyer told People, We vehemently deny these allegations and, if charges are filed, we will fight them in court, not in the press.

The case remains under review, Los Angeles County District Attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said on Saturday. When we make a decision, we will let everyone know.

It is reported that before the police reached her apartment to search the premises Lohan’s stylist handed over the necklace to the authorities. In her defense , the actress claims that the jewelry store let her borrow the necklace and her stylist simply failed or forgot to return it.

If convicted, the Mean Girls actress will face a maximum of three years in jail.
