U.S. skier Lindsey Vonn announced on Sunday that she is divorcing her husband, Thomas, after four years. Reuters

Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn confirmed on Sunday night that she is divorcing Thomas Vonn, her husband of four years.

According to The Associated Press, Lindsey Vonn said she and her husband, who also serves as her chief adviser, started divorce proceedings. Thomas Vonn told The A he filed for divorce last Monday.

This is an extremely difficult time in my personal life and I hope the media and my fans can respect my need for privacy on this matter, Lindsey Vonn's statement to The AP read.

The couple got married on Sept. 29, 2007.

Lindsey Vonn won a gold medal in the downhill and a bronze in the super-G in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Thomas Vonn is a former U.S. racer. He offered her on-hill tactical strategy and helped manage her time away from the slopes, according to The Denver Post.

Lindsey Vonn noted in her statement to The AP that she will continue to be coached by the U.S. Ski Team and look forward to competing the rest of the season.
