Manchester United escaped with a point from Anfield after Javier Hernandez scored a late equalizer against Liverpool in the English Premier League.

It wasn't the most exciting match to herald the return of the Premiership after the international break. However, it wasn't without incident. An evening's battle between Liverpool's Luis Suarez and United's Patrice Evra ended ugly after the Frenchman accused the Uruguayan of racially abusing him, in a complaint made aware to match referee Andre Marriner after the match.

On the football front, it took 68 minutes for the first goal. Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, on his return to the starting lineup since the corresponding fixture in March, scored directly off a free-kick, although Ryan Giggs was guilty of breaking away from the wall, allowing the shot to creep through.

The match seemed to be headed to a fourth consecutive Liverpool home win against United, but substiute Javier Hernandez equalized with nine minutes remaining.

In retrospect, United fans could question Sir Alex Ferguson's team selection. The Scot left Wayne Rooney, Hernandez and Nani all on the bench and instead started with Phil Jones in the defensive midfield position with Park Ji-Sung, Danny Welbeck, Ashley Young, and Darren Fletcher above him.

Liverpool, on the other hand, had a good day at the office, but will be disappointed about not coming away with all three points, especially as it would have been an ideal marker for the first anniversary since Fenway Sports Group released them from the clutches of Hicks and Gillet.
