Steven Gerrard's early penalty kick score was all Liverpool needed to defeat Premier League leaders Manchester City in Carling Cup play on Wednesday at Etihad Stadium, 1-0.

Defender Stefan Savic's awkward challenge of Liverpool's Daniel Agger earned the Reds a penalty kick in the 13th minute, and Gerrard was able to slot it home past goalkeeper Joe Hart's outstretched arm. Agger appeared to sell the foul pretty well with an exaggerated reaction.

Both clubs played with their regular starters. Mario Balotelli was replaced in the 40th minute for midfielder Samir Nasri, and Balotelli didn't seem too pleased to make an early exit.

Manchester City was more of the aggressor in the match. The Citizens controlled the ball for 58 percent of the match, and took 14 shots, with six on goal, compared to Liverpool's five shots, with four on goal. The Reds managed only one corner kick.

The second leg will be on January 25th at Anfield.

Manchester City's next match is on the road against Wigan in a Premier League match, while Liverpool host Stoke.
