Liverpool Transfer News: Dempsey, Walcott… Five Potential Signings Before the Transfer Deadline

With just two days of the transfer window remaining, Brendan Rodgers has intimated that he may still be looking bring in players to continue his overhaul of the Liverpool squad. Having already signed Fabio Borini, Joe Allen, Ossama Assaidi as well as loan-signing Nuri Sahin, the new Liverpool boss has shown that he is eager to put his personal imprint on the side.

But he may not be finished yet this summer.

"I don't think we will be doing too much [business]," he said, according to Liverpool's website. "That's the reality of it. There are maybe one or two things that we can do and hopefully most of that will be done over the next couple of days--in terms of lining it up."

Speculation has linked fringe players like Charlie Adam, Joe Cole, Jay Spearing and even Andy Carroll with a move away in the coming days and that could well free up funds for Rodgers to bring in more talent.

Here are five players who may arrive before Friday's deadline.

Daniel Sturridge
Speculation has increased that Liverpool are mounting a serious offer to try and bring the Chelsea forward to Anfield before the close of the transfer window. The England international looks set to struggle for first-team football with Chelsea this season following their signing of a glut of attacking players, plus the seemingly rejuvenated form of Fernando Torres. However, reports suggest that Chelsea are holding out for £25 million for the 22-year-old.

Even if Liverpool were to ship out some of their fringe players, that is a price that Liverpool are highly unlikely to match. However, ESPN suggests that a season-long loan with a view to a permanent deal may be possible.

Clint Dempsey
Liverpool have pursued the Fulham attacking midfielder for much of the summer, but have yet to make a firm offer. The United States international has yet to play for Fulham this season as he seeks a move and the situation took a further acrimonious turn last week when it emerged that the Cottagers had reported Brendan Rodgers to the Premier League over comments he made about his admiration for the player.

With Liverpool having struggled for goals last season, the addition of a man who scored 17 times in the Premier League last season, mainly from a midfield role, could certainly be a useful one for the Reds. But, with Sunderland also said to be interested, Liverpool may not be able to get the 29-year-old at the reduced value they were perhaps anticipating.

Theo Walcott
Brendan Rodgers probably didn't anticipate that Walcott would be a realistic target this summer, but events of the last 24 hours may have revised his thinking. Reports have emerged that Walcott has rejected Arsenal's offer of a new contract, leaving his future in the balance with less than 12 months remaining on his current deal.

The two parties are said to have come to an agreement that the player will not be sold during this transfer window, but an offer of around £15 million would surely test Arsenal's resolve, given they risk losing him for nothing next summer. Liverpool have long been mooted as a possible destination should Arsenal decide to cash in, though they may also face competition from Manchester City.

Ibrahim Afellay
Having missed much of last season through injury, the wide midfielder looks unlikely to feature prominently in new Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova's plans this season. Afellay's agent has claimed that his client has told he can leave on a season-long loan this summer. Having already signed Nuri Sahin on a similar deal, Liverpool may be tempted to do likewise with Afellay.

The Netherlands international has been linked with a move to Anfield, although Tottenham and Schalke look favorites to secure his signature. Liverpool may be dissuaded from making a push for the 26-year-old having already snapped up Moroccan winger Oussama Assaidi.

Dorus de Vries
Liverpool are looking to bring the Wolves goalkeeper in to act as back-up to Pepe Reina, according to Wednesday's Daily Mail. The Dutchman played for Brendan Rodgers in the Championship for Swansea and it is believed that he could replace current understudy Brad Jones.

The 31-year-old may also provide more competition for Reina, who has become increasingly error-prone in recent times.
