As a club in transition following a disappointing season, Liverpool are expected to be active in the summer transfer period after finishing in seventh place and behind local rival Everton for the second straight season. Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is under heavy scrutiny to reverse the club’s fortunes and vault Liverpool back into Champions League contention next season.

Rodgers has already made moves this offseason. Veteran defender Kolo Toure was announced as a free transfer on May 28, and the official arrival of striker Iago Aspas of Celta Vigo is expected in the coming days, but additional names have been linked to a move to Anfield by the British press in the past week.

Daily Mirror reported that Liverpool were lining up a move for Carlos Tevez. Transfer speculation has surrounded the Argentina star since 2011 after notable disputes with then-manager Roberto Mancini. The possible addition of Tevez would almost certainly be contingent on Luis Suarez going to another club. Tevez is also reportedly on the radar of AC Milan, Juventus, and Monaco, while Suarez has been linked to Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

It’s unclear what Tevez’s valuation is at this point, as the talented striker has often played a limited role behind Edin Dzeko, Sergio Aguero, and even Mario Balotelli. Tevez’s salary wages, which are thought to be roughly £200,000 a week, are also an obstacle for prospective clubs. However, with Mancini out and Chilean manager Manuel Pellegrini in charge at the Etihad, Tevez likely stands a better chance of being featured more prominently with City in 2013-2014.

Meanwhile, Liverpool appear to be the frontrunners for Simon Mignolet. The Sunderland goalkeeper is viewed as a replacement for Pepe Reina, who might return to Spain this summer. The Guardian and Daily Mail have both linked Mignolet to the Reds, though Arsenal and Napoli have reportedly shown interest in signing the 25-year-old Belgian, as well. According to Daily Mail, Liverpool bid £7 million, but Sunderland are holding out for a price closer to £10 million.

Daily Mail also reported that Liverpool have asked about a loan deal for Lucas Piazon. The versatile 19-year-old from Sao Paulo, known for his quick passes and energetic style of play, has shown signs of promise for Chelsea after some rather impressive substitute appearances. Piazon played in only one Premier League match last season despite expectations of a larger role with the club in the upcoming season, and after 10 appearances on loan at Malaga. Crystal Palace are also interested in Piazon.

Another starlet who has generated interest from Liverpool is Sevilla striker Luis Alberto, according to a Daily Star report. The 20-year-old made 38 appearances for Barcelona’s B team while on loan, and had seven appearances for Sevilla in 2011.
