The proposed Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine (AITHM) in Cairns will be built in four years with a $40 million funding, according to LNP candidate Warren Entsch. The James Cook University will run the AITHM, whose aim is to protect Australia from outbreaks of tropical diseases,

The AITHM building to be constructed at the university will house research facilities focusing on bacteriology and biomolecular sciences and virology and pharmaceutical chemistry.

Entsch said the project will also generate employment in Cairns. The area currently has a 10 percent unemployment rate.
