Madeleine McCann's 2007 disappearance from her parents' hotel room in Praia da Luz, Portugal, has remained an open investigation over the past decade, and authorities are currently examining new evidence.

Following the recent identification of Christian Brückner as the prime suspect, police later zeroed in on the 43-year-old's known locations in an attempt to learn new information that could potentially solve the McCann case. Now, a report reveals that the investigation has pivoted once again as officials analyze forensic evidence from wells.

According to The Daily Beast, officials in Portugal confirmed that "three deep wells near a campground" have now been searched. This is particularly important as they are in close proximity to where "Christian B" once stayed. Additionally, it has been stated that investigators are looking at "forensic evidence taken from the wells." However, the presence of lime within the structures may present unexpected issues as it can "lead to a faster disintegration of human remains."

The development follows a string of other reports that have centered on Brückner and the role he may have played in Maddie's disappearance. Previously, "buried hard drives and USB sticks containing ‘thousands’ of images and videos" were located at a now-abandoned piece of property that had once been occupied by "Christian B" and a specific phone call made on the night of the 3-year-old's disappearance has also been discussed.

Additionally, Brückner's behavior has also been scrutinized since being publicly named as the prime suspect. Not only has his former roommate stated that he was once "obsessed with the dark web," but it has also been reported that he refused to cooperate throughout the open investigation. However, his lawyer states that his client's decision to remain silent about the McCann case does not necessarily "show that he is guilty."

As for where the case goes from here, police have reportedly been fighting over a DNA sample from the hotel room where McCann's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, had been staying on that night in 2007. Some also believe that "significant" evidence could be provided by unexpected people down the road.

Additional searches in the area pertaining to the McCann case are expected to take place later this week.
