Magic Johnson’s 20-year-old son Earvin Johnson III went public with his boyfriend, and his father could not be more supportive.

"Cookie and I love EJ and support him in every way. We're very proud of him,” Johnson told TMZ. Cookie is Johnson’s wife, whose real name is Earlitha Kelly. They married in 1991.

Earvin, who has rarely been spotted by the paparazzi, was dressed in a fur coat and carried a red purse, walking hand-in-hand with his boyfriend.

The 20-year-old is currently a student at NYU, but was in Hollywood at the time.

His announcement comes a significant time for same-sex couples. Just last week, the Supreme Court heard the first of two pending gay marriage cases.

The first case dealt with California’s Proposition 8 that bans same-sex marriage in the state. The court later heard arguments on the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, signed by former President Bill Clinton, which defines marriage as being between a man and a woman.

President Obama has publicly shown support for same-sex marriage, saying in an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts last year, “I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.”

Many celebrities have taken to social media to show support of same-sex marriage, such as superstar Beyoncé. “If you like it you should be able to put a ring on it #We Will Unite 4 Marriage Equality!” the 31-year-old singer wrote in a handwritten note that she posted on Instagram.

Madonna also posted a picture of a handwritten note, "Marriage equality! Let's start a revolution."
