Racking up their first perfect score of the season, Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy took the lead on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” Monday night in Los Angeles.

The pair danced the tango to “Feel So Close” by Calvin Harris, and the judges were so in love with their routine that they awarded them a perfect 40 out of 40. Their scores put them at the top of the leader board.

Even though everything seemed to come together for the pair in the live show, the rehearsal wasn’t so coherent. Chmerkovskiy, who is known for having an attitude with the stars sometimes, got frustrated with his partner for making the same mistakes over and over. The two received 36 out of 40 points last week, and the pro dancer seemed to be cracking under the pressure.

“I think for Maks, he’s such a passionate person that I think when he feels things aren’t going his way, he takes on the role of fixing things,” Davis told the camera. “I think that’s a role that entails a lot of pressure.” In the end, it was the Olympic ice skater, who took home a gold medal at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, who was able to calm her partner. Eventually, the two were able have an emotional talk where they discussed their fears.

Maybe a heart-to-heart was just what the couple needed, because judge Carrie Anne Inaba was practically speechless, Len Goodman said “it was special” and Bruno Tonioli called it “incredible.”

Many fans of the show would love to see the two become romantically involved. Chmerkovskiy has been more vulnerable with Davis than with any other partner, and most fans find their chemistry electrifying. “DWTS” viewers on Twitter couldn’t wait to comment on Monday’s episode.
