Friday, the Department of Statistics Malaysia said in a report that the trade surplus stood at MYR 12.5 billion in March, up from MYR 11.97 billion in February. Economists were looking the trade surplus of MYR 11 billion.

Exports dropped 15.6% year-over-year in March, while imports declined 28.7%.

On a monthly basis, exports increased 10.3% to MYR 43.65 billion in March, while imports rose 13.3% to MYR 31.14 billion.

For the first quarter of 2009, exports declined 20% annually to MYR 121.47 billion, while imports fell 28.9% to MYR 88.8 billion. At the same time, the trade surplus amounted to MYR 32.67 billion.
