Malaysia's current account surplus declined to MYR30.4 billion in the fourth quarter from MYR38.7 billion in the third quarter, a report by the Department of Statistics said Tuesday.

In the fourth quarter, the surplus on goods decreased to MYR38.9 billion from MYR49.2 billion in the preceding quarter. At the same time, the services account recorded a surplus of MYR0.7 billion, reversing the deficit of MYR0.2 billion in the preceding quarter.

Meanwhile, the deficit on the income account narrowed to MYR5.2 billion from MYR5.8 billion in the third quarter. The deficit on the current transfers account fell to MYR4 billion from MYR4.5 billion in the preceding quarter.

For the whole of 2008, the current account surplus stood at MYR129.9 billion, up from a surplus of MYR100.4 billion in the previous year.
