Manchester United were dealt a blow by ten-man Newcastle United after they were held 1-1 at Old Trafford, albeit in controversial circumstances.

United had Wayne Rooney back in the team after he missed out against Benfica with a hip injury, along with Ryan Giggs, Ashley Young, Nani and Javier Hernandez - the home side had a potent attacking force. They found it hard to break Newcastle though and their opener was laced with luck, early in the second half.

Steven Taylor got a foot to Rooney's shot from outside the box, but it richocheted of Hernandez, who didn't know much about it, and into the net. Immediately at the other end, United had David de Gea to thank after he pulled-off a fingertip save off Fabricio Coloccini.

The equalizer came soonly enough, just past the hour mark, albeit in hugely controversial circumstances. Rio Ferdinand seemed to cleanly win the ball of Hatem Ben Arfa with a sliding tackle, but the referee pointed to the spot. Demba Ba stepped up to slot it home and Newcastle survived a tense finale with ten men after Jonas Gutierrez saw a second yellow, to take a valuable point.

The Toons remain at fourth spot with the point, while United are four points behind leaders Man City, having played a game more, and will hope Liverpool can help them with a result against City on Sunday.
