Tottenham dominated the attack on Sunday at White Hart Lane, but still failed to get the victory, as Manchester United took advantage of their opportunities in a 3-1 win.

Wayne Rooney scored before halftime, and Ashley Young provided two excellent second-half goals to take a 3-0 advantage over Spurs, despite a rather lackluster offensive effort by Sir Alex Ferguson's squad.

Jermain Defoe made the final score a little more respectable with an 87th minute strike, and Tottenham showed signs of mounting a comeback despite the seemingly insurmountable deficit. But the United defense maintained their composure to prevent any heroics.

Tottenham took 18 shots with six on goal, while Manchester United only recorded six shots, but five were on target. Spurs had a slight advantage in possession at 52 percent.

It was a difficult loss for Harry Redknapp's side following the 5-2 drumming the club recently took to north London rival Arsenal at Emirates Stadium. The Gunners are only four points out of Tottenham's third-place position. The chances of Tottenham challenging either Manchester club for second place look increasingly slim.

Many Tottenham supporters found their way to the exits before the final whistle.
