Robin van Persie
Robin van Persie could be Arsenal's highest-paid player ever, if he stays on Reuters

All the signs are that whatever unfolds in the final round of Premier League fixtures on Sunday, Sir Alex Ferguson acknowledges that his Manchester United side requires some summer strengthening.

United could still claim the title if they win and Manchester City slip-up against Queens Park Rangers. Yet, after letting an eight-point lead slip in the closing weeks of the season and an awful campaign in Europe, there is much room for harsh introspection at Old Trafford.

Many United fans have long clamored for a superstar signing to breathe fresh excitement into the Theatre Of Dreams. And, If reports are to be believed, that could be just what the club are aiming for this summer.

TalkSport reports on Wednesday that United have made a stunning enquiry for Arsenal star Robin van Persie. The Dutch striker's contract expires at the Emirates next summer, with discussions on a new deal to be held at the end of the season. If Van Persie fails to commits his future to the club it is widely expected that Arsenal will be forced to cash in on the Premier League's top scorer for fear of losing him on a free.

Barcelona and Manchester City have been linked with the 28-year-old thus far, but TalkSport now claims that United have made a move to snatch the key player from one of their main rivals.

It would still be a massive surprise if this deal were to come off with various factors counting against it. Not least questions over United's ability to compete with the likes of City in terms of the financial package they could offer both Arsenal and Van Persie.

A more realistic target may be Udinese midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah. Italian website TuttoMercatoWeb suggests that United are interested in the Ghana international.

The 23-year-old may not have the reputation of some of the names considered targets to bolster United's midfield next season, but may offer good value for money.

Another option for United's midfield could be Moussa Sissoko. The 22-year-old Toulouse player has been linked with United as well as Premier League rivals Chelsea and Liverpool in recent times. And the France international's agent has suggested that his client may be moving on this summer.

Sissoko is now in talks with Toulouse, Frederic Guerra told CalcioMercato, according to Tribal Football. This might be a good time to change his shirt this summer.

The player has both the market to talk about and discussions with other clubs, which have already begun. With who? I cannot reveal anything.

There have also been further developments in United's reported pursuit of Borussia Dortmund's Shinji Kagawa. News out of Germany suggests that Dortmund are interested in Chilean teenager Angelo Henriquez, according to Sports Illustrated. What does this have to do with Kagawa? Well, United have first option on the Universidad de Chile striker until 2014 meaning that he could well be a sweetener in any deal for the Japanese international.

United has also been heavily linked with a move for exciting Porto winger James Rodriguez. However, according to the Colombian's agent, Silvio Sandri, there have yet to be any formal offers for the 20-year-old.

We are aware of informal sounding out of the player, from other clubs not just Manchester United, but, to date, there's been no concrete proposal, he said, according to the official Manchester United website.

Portuguese publication O Jogo claims that the Portuguese champions will not let their starlet leave for less than his €45million buy-out clause.
