A Marine in town for Fleet Week was struck and killed by a car on the West Side Highway in New York City, early Thursday.

The Marine, dressed in full uniform, was crossing at W. 49th St. when an Acura heading south struck him. He was heading to his ship, the USS Iwo Jima, docked at a pier on the Hudson River. The intersection has no pedestrian signals.

The 39-year-old driver pulled over and called 911. He waited for police to arrive, and was questioned by the police at the scene.

The Marine died at the scene, while other Marines were not injured.

The Marine's name was not immediately released.

This is a tragic event and a very sad day for the Marine Corps family and our thoughts and prayers are with our marine and his family, Col. Frank Donovan said, according to the NY Daily News.

During the rest of Fleet Week, we ask the citizens of New York to provide their thoughts and prayers for our Marine and his family.

No charges are expected for the collision, which appears to be an accident.

The Iwo Jima participated in the Parade of Ships that kicked off the six-day-long Fleet Week festivities on Wednesday, with a parade of military vessels sailing up the Hudson River in New York.
