'Guardians of the Galaxy'
Marvel revealed plenty of new details about their upcoming movies during their Comic Con panel while also revealing the first footage of "Guardians of the Galaxy." Marvel Studios

Marvel’s Comic Con panel was full of big announcements. During their time in San Diego, Marvel discussed the sequels to “Thor,” “Captain America” and “The Avengers” while also revealing new details about “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

The very beginning of the Marvel Comic Con panel featured a great surprise for fans in attendance as Tom Hiddleston came out as Loki to tease a look at footage from “Thor: The Dark World,” in which he co-stars. The footage features a massive war between the gods of Asgard, notes Rotten Tomatoes, with Loki acting as a catalyst to further destruction. “Thor: The Dark World” will be the first of the Marvel Phase 2 movies and will be released on Nov. 23, 2013.

Following Loki’s takeover of the panel, Marvel offered a look at “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” with stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johannson and Samuel L. Jackson. Other important actors, including Anthony Mackie (who plays The Falcon), Frank Grillo (Crossbones) and Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes) were also on hand. According to Johannson, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” will reveal more of the origin story of the relationship between her character, the Black Widow, and Captain America. Slashfilm reports the “Captain America” footage revealed during the panel plays more like a thriller than a typical superhero movie. The footage also gave a first look at The Falcon in flight as well as an ending shot introducing Stan as the titular Winter Soldier. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” the second movie to be released during Marvel’s Phase 2, will hit theaters on April 4, 2014.

While “Thor” and “Captain America” are established properties, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is lesser known and the Comic Con panel introduced the main cast as well as the first footage from the few weeks of shooting currently completed. The movie stars Chris Pratt as the Peter Quill, also known as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora and the superhero team will include a talking tree and a talking raccoon. Speaking about his role, Pratt addressed the similarities of Quill and Han Solo, in terms of being outlaws with plenty of wit, and “Guardians of the Galaxy” as a “space opera,” reports the Associated Press.

The most newsworthy portion of the “Guardians” panel involved Djimon Hounsou’s slip revealing Thanos being in the film. Ronan the Accuser, played by Lee Pace, will be the main villain but Hounsou told attendees that his character, Korath, serves as an ally to Ronan and to Thanos, reports Screencrush. The site believes that the recently signed Benecio Del Toro could play Thanos in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” scheduled to be released Aug. 4, 2014.

Though many had expected Thanos, revealed at the end of “The Avengers,” would feature prominently in the sequel, Joss Whedon revealed other plans. Whedon, the director of the two “Avengers” movies, announced the title of the Avengers sequel as well as its main villain. The sequel to the “Avengers” will be titled “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” and will feature the sentient robot Ultron as the main villain, Whedon said. Thanos is the main villain of the Avengers, and Marvel may be planning for the villain to be the main focus of “Avengers 3.” A video of Marvel’s Comic Con panel, sans movie footage, can be viewed below.
