“Today Show” host Matt Lauer is back in the news, this time regarding something that occurred in the Twittersphere on Tuesday.

Lauer issued an apology to former “Today” intern Mark Zinni, who said that the 55-year-old host was “not so nice” when he worked for him on NBC’s morning show. You can read Lauer’s tweet for yourself below:

According to E! Online, Lauer found out about his former intern’s comments through his 210,000 Twitter followers. On Tuesday, Cleveland’s Fox 8 News Executive Producer Daren Sweeney, who works alongside Zinni, tweeted: "'I was just a young kid with a bright future ahead of me,' @markzinni talking about internship at @todayshow and 'not so nice" @MLauer."

Zinni retweeted Sweeney’s post, prompting a wave of feedback from Lauer’s fans and Zinni’s supporters, E! Online reports.

In a post on Fox 8’s website, Zinni attempted to qualify his earlier statements about his “Today Show” tenure, noting that he had an “amazing internship” in 1997.

"If you know me, you probably know that I don't take myself too seriously," he wrote. "So, my answer was more of a joke about being young and naive during my time at Today, but I added that he wasn't nice to me. I didn't slam the guy, I just made an honest comment."

Zinni never expected Lauer to acknowledge his comments, let alone apologize.

"Bottom line, I was shocked Matt Lauer even bothered with me and, really, he remembers me? I'm flattered," Zinni added.

The social media whirlwind comes on the heels of several reports that Lauer may soon be out of a job, with NBC reportedly considering Anderson Cooper as his “Today Show” replacement. NBC denied claims that Lauer will be gone before the end of his contract.

"Matt Lauer is the best in the business," “Today Show” head honcho Alex Wallace told The Associated Press. "We want him in the 'Today' show anchor chair for many years to come." Lauer earns $25 million per year as “Today Show” host.

Lauer has also been mentioned as a possible replacement for “Jeopardy” host Alex Trebeck. Trebeck is rumored to be retiring in 2016.
