There certainly have been a number of shake-ups in television this week.

First Katie Couric, then Meredith Vieira and not Matt Lauer are rumored to be leaving their shows.

Reports have surfaced that Lauer, host of the Today show will step down from his position at the NBC morning news show.

Entertainment Tonight reported that the 53-year-old co-host already notified NBC that he plans to leave the Today show when his contract expires on Dec. 31, 2012. Lauer has hosted the show since 1997.

There seems to be an awful lot of speculation around news anchors these days, and it's not our practice to comment on any of it. Matt Lauer has a long term contract with NBC News and 'Today,' the 'Today' Show said in a statement released on Wednesday.

This announcement comes a day after it was reported that Lauer's co-host, Meredith Vieira is leaving the 'Today' Show to be closer to her husband who is battling multiple sclerosis and cancer.
