Consumer prices in Mauritius rose 0.5% sequentially in the first quarter, the country's Central Statistics Office said Thursday.

During the quarter, consumer prices increased the most by 3.7% for miscellaneous goods and services. This was followed by a 3% rise in the price of education. Prices increased for most other groups in the first quarter.

However, prices of utilities declined 0.6%, and that of transport dropped 2.3%. Price of communication fell 1.1%, while prices in restaurants and hotels slipped 0.3%.

Meanwhile, consumer prices rose 0.26% month-on-month in March, following a 0.4% increase in February. Year-on-year, consumer prices were up 4.8% in March compared to a 4.6% rise in the previous month.
