Melissa Gilbert has filed for divorce from husband Bruce Boxleitner, ending their 16 years of marriage. The versatile actress filed for divorce almost six months after the couple announced their separation.

Gilbert, 47, cited irreconciliable differences as the grounds for filing divorce Monday in a Los Angeles Superior Court, People magazine reported.

From the beginning, Gilbert and Bozleitner's relationship had its ups and downs. The Tron and the recent Disney sequel Tron: Legacy, star had called off his engagement to Gilbert twice before the two got married in 1995.

We have loved each other for a very long time and we share four incredible sons together. On behalf of our family we ask to be allowed our privacy during this very difficult time, Gilbert had told People in March.

Gilbert has asked for a shared custody of their son Michael, 15. The couple also has three sons from their previous marriages.

The actress also seeks not to pay spousal support to Boxleitner, 61, the report said.

Coincidentally, the divorce papers were filed the same week as that of Gilbert's sister, Sara Gilbert, who announced her separation from Allison Adler.
