Meryl Streep recently fired back at Rose McGowan after the actress accused her of siding with Harvey Weinstein.

On Monday, “The Devil Wears Prada” star released a statement saying that McGowan’s claims hurt her. However, Streep insisted that she was unaware of Weinstein’s sexual misconduct issues when they worked together in the ‘90s.

“It hurt to be attacked by Rose McGowan in banner headlines this weekend, but I want to let her know I did not know about Weinstein’s crimes, not in the ‘90s when he attacked her, or through subsequent decades when he proceeded to attack others,” Streep said.

Last week, McGowan tweeted against the initial plans of actresses to wear black at the Golden Globes as their way of silently protesting the series of sexual harassment issues in Hollywood.

The “Charmed actress took offense over the fact that actresses were gunning for a “silent protest.” On her Twitter account, she called out Streep and said that her silence is the problem. She also said that the award-winning actress happily worked with “the pig monster,” Weinstein.

“You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly and affect no real change. I despise your hypocrisy. Maybe you should all wear Marchesa,” she added. McGowan’s tweet has since been deleted.

In a follow up tweet, McGowan apologized for mentioning the Marchesa brand. She also said that she saw her “Charmed” co-star, Alyssa Milano, wearing the line and it ignited something in her that she couldn’t explain.

Meanwhile, Streep added that she wasn’t deliberately silent over Weinstein’s sexual abuse cases. “I didn’t know. I don’t tacitly approve of rape. I didn’t know. I don’t like young women being assaulted. I didn’t know this was happening. I don’t know where Harvey lives, nor has he ever been to my home. I have never in my life been invited to his hotel. I have been to his office once, for a meeting with Wes Craven for ‘Music of the Heart’ in 1998,” she said.

Streep added that she sent her contact number of McGowan through common friends and she waited to hear from her directly so they could clarify things to each other. However, McGowan has not called her.
