A magnitude 7.6 earthquake hit Mexico on Tuesday, with an epicenter in Guerrero felt throughout Mexico City.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the earthquake to be 7.6 on the Richter scale and struck six miles below.

The earthquake had an epicenter in Gerrero, shaking central southern Mexico on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported.

According to the report, the 7.6-magnitude quake shook buildings and prompted an evacuation of workers and residents from many buildings.

Mexico's National Seismological Survey reported the epicenter southwest of Ometepec.
