Actor Michael Douglas said on Wednesday that he and his family were devastated by the arrest of his son Cameron Douglas on charges of selling the illegal drug methamphetamine.

It was the first time Michael Douglas and former wife, Diandra Douglas, publicly addressed their son's July 28 arrest.

The family is devastated and very disappointed in Cameron's recent behavior, they said in a statement to People magazine.

Any family who has dealt with substance abuse knows how devastating it can be.

Cameron Douglas, 30, could get life in prison if convicted of charges that he sold thousands of dollars worth of methamphetamine.

He was arrested at a Manhattan hotel, and prosecutors allege he shipped large quantities of the drug from California to New York via mail service FedEx.

Cameron Douglas, a sometime movie actor who has a previous cocaine possession arrest, was transferred to a jail this week from home detention after his girlfriend, Kelly Sott, allegedly tried to smuggle heroin to him in a toothbrush.

Following that incident, police arrested Sott.

Michael Douglas, the son of Hollywood actor Kirk Douglas, won an Oscar for his role in the 1987 movie Wall Street, and has since starred in Traffic and You, Me and Dupree. He is married to actress Catherine Zeta-Jones.
