Christopher (Laird Macintosh) and Poodle (Tricia O’Kelley) made a surprising return to the Pemberton mansion in the Season 1 finale of “The Mick.” But what was more unexpected for Mickey in the season ender was to find herself emotionally attached to Chris and Poodle’s kids Sabrina (Sofia Black-D’Elia), Chip (Thomas Barbusca) and Ben (Jack Stanton).

“I always knew that the parents would come back at some point in the season,” Kaitlin Olson told Entertainment Weekly. “It ended up working out that it was the finale.”

Olson added that she wanted the finale to be hilarious and touching at the same time. “I wanted it to be funny, but I also wanted it to have a little bit of heart,” Olson said. “I never want to beat people over the head with Mickey having emotions. [But] I liked that she felt displaced [when Chris and Poodle returned] and that she felt like these were her kids now, and that she actually cares about them. I also like that she was standing up for them in her own way. And that in her own way, Sabrina was standing up for Mickey, even though she denies it later. That was nice to see a little moment of affection in there, so you can then subvert the whole thing.”

Olson also pointed out that it was “great” that FOX had already renewed the series for Season 2 before they filmed the finale, because that gave them an idea on where the series would be going beyond the finale.

Towards the end of finale, Mickey found out that Chris and Poodle had no intention to stay in the mansion for good. Chris revealed that they only came back to get cash before they could ultimately break up with one another. Poodle wanted Mickey to take their kids, saying that she’s already grown close to them anyway. Mickey was hesitant at first, but when Poodle offered her a million dollars, she quickly accepted her proposal, saying that she could certainly give it a good try.

The parting scene was then interrupted by the arrival of the FBI. Chris and Poodle tried to run away but the feds got them after they were attacked by guard dogs.

In the final moments of the episode, Mickey, Sabrina, Chip and Alba (Carla Jimenez) went to Ben’s room to tell him the news about his parents. But the quartet were shocked to find Ben playing with Mickey’s lighter as fire started to eat up his room. Mickey, Alba, Sabrina, Chip and Ben got out of the mansion safely, but it seems that the mansion will no longer be there when the show returns next season.

Olson said that she’s proud of what they accomplished in the freshman run of the series. “[Co-creators John and Dave Chernin] and I all had a very specific vision, and that doesn’t always line up with traditional network comedies, and I think we were able to make a comedy that does belong on Fox but it still has a cable sensibility that we’re proud of,” Olson said.

Olson also gave the Chernin brothers a shoutout on Twitter, congratulating them on the success of the show.

Jimenez replied to Olson’s tweet, thanking her and the Chernin siblings for the show’s “DREAM” Season 1.
