Will Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling) and Danny Castellano (Chris Messina) reunite in “The Mindy Project” Season 6? Hulu

“The Mindy Project” has been renewed by Hulu for a sixth and final season, but it is still unclear whether or not the upcoming episodes will feature Chris Messina’s Danny Castellano.

While speaking with Variety, the actor said that he will be more than happy to reprise his role. Unfortunately, nothing has been finalized yet. “We haven’t talked about it yet. I love those guys, though, and I would love to come back. It’s an amazing group of people. I love Mindy Kaling. I love that character that she wrote for me. That whole experience was like a master class in comedy, watching all of those actors. The writers were super gifted. I would love to come back. I’m not sure what’s going to happen yet, but I hope so,” he said.

According to TV Line, Messina was originally tapped as a series regular for “The Mindy Project” and appeared in all episodes from Seasons 1 to 4. However, his status was downgraded to recurring guest star status for Season 5. He was last seen on the show in the premiere episode for Season 5 in October 2016. Messina’s Danny also happens to be the father of Mindy Lahiri’s (Kaling) son.

Meanwhile, the renewal of “The Mindy Project” for its sixth and final season was announced by Hulu’s head of content, Craig Erwich, last month. “It has been an honor and a joy to work with Mindy and the entire creative team behind ‘The Mindy Project.’ This series has been part of Hulu since we launched the service and, thanks to Mindy’s incredibly unique voice and vision, has remained one of our most popular and beloved series over the past five years. While we can’t wait to see what Mindy has in store for what will undoubtedly be a fantastic sixth and final season, we know ‘The Mindy Project’ will live on as fans will continue to watch, discover and re-live all of the best moments from the complete series on Hulu,” he said.

Kaling, who created the series, also dished on what’s in store for Season 6. According to the actress, the upcoming episodes will center on Mindy’s life now that she’s a married woman. Throughout the past five seasons, Mindy has expressed her desire to tie the knot. She has come close to getting married a couple of times, but it was only in the finale for Season 5 that it actually happened.

“The final season is the final time – it’s the best time – to confront what that reality is for her. And really, we’ve put her through the ringer. It’s hard. I’m a romantic at heart. I believe that marriage is like, a sacred relationship, and I really like it. But I’m also single myself, so I see every side of it. It’s going to be really fun to explore,” she told Entertainment Weekly.

“The Mindy Project” Season 6 also stars Ike Barinholtz as Morgan, Ed Weeks as Jeremy, Xosha Roquemore as Tamra and more. It will stream on Hulu starting September.
