“The Mindy Project” has good news and bad news. Fans will be happy to know after the subtle Season 5 cliffhanger that the show was renewed for Season 6! However, “The Mindy Project” Season 6 will serve as the final season.

Hulu didn’t cancel the comedy due to ratings. It seems Kaling, who serves as star and showrunner, decided that it was time for Mindy’s story to come to an end. “We started this series when she was single, and now she’s married and has a kid and she has a stepdaughter, and it kind of just felt like [a few] more episodes was all we needed to wind this down,” Kaling told Entertainment Weekly.

“The Mindy Project” Season 6 doesn’t have an exact premiere date yet, but it will start to air on Hulu sometime in September. The series finale will likely air in 2018. An episode count for Season 6 has not been revealed yet, but it’s worth noting that Season 5 had a shorter season than usual with 14 episodes.

Season 5 left off with Mindy married to Ben (Bryan Greenberg), but she seemed to have a look of regret on her face just before the credits rolled. Kaling wouldn’t reveal too much about Mindy’s relationship troubles in Season 6, but she assured audiences that there will be some more growth and maturity for our favorite obstetrician.

“I want to do something that feels good but also makes you feel like when you leave the character, that she’s learned something in these past six years—for someone who doggedly doesn’t want to learn. She’s actually, unwittingly become kind of better,” Kaling teased.

Kaling also teased that fans could expect guest stars. “It’s going to be very exciting to pull some of these movie people I’ve been working with and have them come be in the show,” Kaling added.

The actress has most recently been working on the star-studded “Ocean’s Eight,” with Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter and more. Perhaps Mindy Lahiri could even meet the ultimate rom-com queen, Sandra Bullock. Fans will have to tune in to see which famous faces will appear before the series finale.

The final season of “The Mindy Project” premieres this fall on Hulu.
