“The Mindy Project” Season 6 just cast Ana Ortiz to play the role of Dr. Mary Hernandez.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the “Devious Maids” alum’s character will be working for a women’s clinic and will be in direct competition with Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling), Jody (Garret Dillahunt) and their peers’ clinic. Jody will become concerned when his patients start ditching his services in favor of Dr. Hernandez’s. With this, Jody will try to take Dr. Hernandez down, but the former may soon develop feelings for the latter and make things even more complicated for the both of them.

Prior to Ortiz’s casting, TV Line first reported that the creators of “The Mindy Project” Season 6 are looking at casting a Latina actress for the role. Dr. Hernandez was described as 40-something smart and gorgeous physician who will upset Jody.

Other than Jody and Dr. Hernandez’s storyline, “The Mindy Project” Season 6 will continue to center on Mindy as she goes through her first year of marriage. While speaking with the same publication on the set of the Hulu serie, Kaling said, “Not only does Mindy evolve, she becomes the person we always hoped she would become. But she’s still really fun and opinionated. We want to end the show with you feeling like this was really a journey.”

Meanwhile, Chris Messina will also return to “The Mindy Project” Season 6 in multiple episodes. The news was confirmed when Kaling attended the Television Critics Association summer press tour recently. According to the executive producer and star, Danny’s (Messina) return won’t mean that he and Mindy will get back together. After all, they are both happily married to their respective partners.

“We aren’t super interested in tying everything up in a bow. We’re trying to avoid that, while also leaving the audience with the sense that Mindy had some growth. Happily ever after can sometimes be romantic happiness, but it also can be a feeling of contentment about your life as a professional person and as a mother,” she said.

“The Mindy Project” Season 6 will premiere on Hulu on Sept. 12.
