Remains found in concrete inside a rental home in Wichita, Kansas most likely belongs to a 3-year-old boy, who went missing July 6, authorities said Tuesday. The confirmation about the remains will be determined after the DNA results are out.

The remains were found in the home where Evan Brewer lived with his mother Miranda Miller, police said, adding that the mother's boyfriend Stephen Bodine, 40, also lived in the home but was recently evicted.

"We have a tentative identification on the child, but confirmation of the child's identity is being coordinated through the Sedgwick County Medical Examiner," officer Charley Davidson said.

According to Wichita Police Department Lt. Jeff Gilmore, the former landlord of the house informed police Saturday about a structure that was found during cleaning the property. The former landlord told police that the structure was emitting a strong odor. After police removed the structure, they found the remains inside it.

Gilmore said the investigation into Evan’s disappearance is ongoing and it is unclear who allegedly killed the baby and when the remains were stored in the structure.

“Child deaths are always difficult,” Gilmore said, adding: “The circumstances surrounding this particular case have been difficult for the family, the first responders and the community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the child and those impacted in this tragic case.”

Police said Evan allegedly suffered from child abuse and his father Carlo Brewer was concerned for several months about the safety of his son who was in Miller’s custody.

During the news conference Tuesday, Gilmore announced that the mother and her boyfriend are suspected of interfering with parental custody. Bodine is also suspected of aggravated assault, People magazine said, citing police. However, it was unclear if the assault history had anything to do with Evan's case.

Multiple reports claimed that Evan's father had raised a complaint with Protection from Abuse Order (PFA) last year amid concerns about his son. He filed several reports of abuse with the Department for Children and Families (DCF). In March, he told police that he had not met his son for nearly a month.

In April, DCF began investigating an allegation that Evan had been abused, Gilmore said. The investigation started after it was reported that the toddler was seen with injuries on several occasions and also seen wearing torn clothes. On the day of Evan's disappearance, a court issued a protection from abuse order for Brewer on behalf of his son.

In August, Gilmore said, investigators learned that Miller “was aware of the protection from order and was actively eluding being served.”

Evan’s paternal grandfather, Carl Brewer — the former mayor of Wichita and a candidate for governor of Kansas — responded to the incident, saying: “We are devastated by the death of our sweet and loving grandson, Evan. We cannot begin to make sense of this tragedy but are thankful the suspects are in custody. We request prayers and privacy for our family during this difficult time and while the police continue their investigation.”
