At least 89 are dead after a massive tornado tore through Joplin, Mo., a city of nearly 50,000 people, Reuters reported.

U.S. weather officals said that the tornado that hit around dinnertime on Sunday may be the deadliest in the country since 1953.

Authorities warned the death toll could rise as rescuers continue their search. An unknown number of people were injured and officials expect to find more bodies as they dig through the debris, Reuters said.
