RTTNews - A mixed open is expected for Tokyo stocks on Thursday, following Wall Street's gains overnight. New confidence about energy demand sent oil prices soaring, and U.S. markets followed suite.

Japan stocks moved to their lowest levels of the month on Wednesday.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 Average declined 80.96 points or 0.79 percent to finish at 10,204.00.

Among the Nikkei component stocks, there were 49 closing higher, 168 were lower and 8 were unchanged.

The broader Topix index was down 6.41 points or 0.7 percent at 943.25.

Among the stocks and sectors of interest, cargo shipper Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha declined 9 yen or 2.34 percent after a decline in the Baltic Dry Index of shipping rates. Among the others in the sector, Mitsui OSK Lines was down 13 yen or 2.24 percent and Nippon Yusen was down 6 yen or 1.49 percent.

Electronics giant Sony saw shares decline 100 yen or 3.85 percent after announcing a price drop on its Playstation 3 entertainment console.

Battery maker Sanyo Electric jumped 23 yen or 10.27 percent after a news report that Toyota Motor will buy lithium-ion batteries from Sanyo, a report the company refused to confirm. Fellow battery maker GS Yuasa was down 13 yen or 1.48 percent.

In the heavily traded banking sector, Mitsubishi UFJ was down 9 yen or 1.52 percent, Mizuho Financial was down 2 yen or 0.89 percent, Sumitomo Mitsui was down 60 yen or 1.50 percent and Resona Holdings was down 27 yen or 2.05 percent.

Overseas, U.S. stocks rose on Wednesday, buoyed by rising energy prices.

At the closing bell on Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 61.22 points or 0.66 percent at 9,279.16, the Nasdaq Composite index was up 13.32 points or 0.68 percent at 1,969.24 and the Standard & Poor's 500 index was up 6.79 points or 0.69 percent at 996.46.

All of the other major market indices in the Asia/Pacific region closed lower on Wednesday.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index was down 352.04 points or 1.73 percent at 19,954.23.

In China, the Shanghai Composite index was down 125.30 points or 4.30 percent at 2,785.58.

The BSE 30 index in India dropped 225.62 points or 1.50 percent to 14,809.64.

Indonesia's Jakarta Composite index was down 59.24 points or 2.53 percent at 2.277.75.

The KOSPI/Seoul Composite index in South Korea declined 4.28 points or 0.28 percent to 1,545.96.

The Taiwan Weighted Index dropped 1.19 points or 0.02 percent to 6.788.58.
