RTTNews - Japan stocks moved higher in a choppy, low volume trading session on Tuesday.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 Average advanced 61.20 points or 0.58 percent to 10,585.46.
Among the Nikkei component stocks, there were 138 advancers, 66 decliners and 21 closing unchanged.
The broader Topix Index of all Tokyo Stock Exchange First Section issues was up 4.27 points or 0.4 percent at 973.51.
Among the stocks and sectors of note, the major banks were little changed. Mitsubishi UFJ and Resona Holdings were unchanged, Mizuho Financial was up 4 yen or 1.71 percent and Sumitomo Mitsui was up 50 yen or 1.22 percent .
In the auto sector, Honda was down 40 yen or 1.25 percent, Fuji heavy was down 8 yen or 1.84 percent, Mazda shed 2 yen or 0.76 percent, Mitsubishi Motors was unchanged and Toyota was down 20 yen or 0.48 percent.
Among the drug makers, Astellas Pharma was down 190 yen or 4.90 percent, Daiichi Sankyo was up 90 yen or 4.95 percent and Takeda Pharmaceutical was down 40 yen or 1.03 percent.
Elsewhere, Sony was down 10 yen or 0.36 percent, Canon shares were unchanged, TDK was down 140 yen or 2.54 percent and Nomura Holdings was up 24 yen or 2.97 percent.
Overseas, Wall Street moved lower for a second straight session on Tuesday, as traders pulled back in advance of Wednesday's rate decision and economic statement from the Federal Reserve.
At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 96.50 points or 1.03 percent at 9,241.45, the Nasdaq Composite index was down 22.51 points or 1.13 percent at 1,969.23 and the Standard & Poor's 500 index was lower by 12.75 points or 1.27 percent at 994.35.
Other major markets in the Asia/Pacific region closed higher on Tuesday.
The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong was up 144.69 points or 0.69 percent at 21,074.21.
In China, the Shanghai Composite index rose 14.97 points or 0.46 percent to 3.264.73.
India's BSE 30 index was up 64.82 points or 0.43 percent at 15.074.59.
The Jakarta Composite index in Indonesia was up 9.71 points or 0.41 percent at 2.399.28.
South Korea's KOSPI/Seoul Composite index was up 3.10 percent or 0.20 percent at 1,579.21.
The Taiwan Weighted Index was up 26.15 points or 0.30 percent at 6,909.02.
On Wednesday's economic data calendar, Japan is scheduled to release final June numbers for industrial production. Also on tap are July numbers for the domestic corporate good price index, and the Bank of Japan will release its monthly report.
