Cydia Substrate MobileSubstrate update

Jay Freeman’s (Saurik) MobileSubstrate has been finally updated to support iOS 7 and 64-bit ARM (ARM 64) processor devices such as the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5S and the iPad Air. Along with the arrival of MobileSubstrate is also a new name -- Cydia Substrate.

Cydia Substrate, developed by Saurik, is a code insertion platform responsible for interfacing many iOS tweaks and modifications with iOS. Before this latest MobileSubstrate/Cydia Substrate release, users who have recently ran jailbreak software such as Evasi0n 7 on their iOS device found that many tweaks and mods were completely broken or extremely buggy. These issues were due in part to the sudden release of the Evasi0n 7 jailbreak by the Evad3rs team. The Evasi0n jailbreak left developers scrambling all of a sudden to update their software for compatibility with iOS 7.

Many of the tweaks and mods were still compatible for 32-bit iOS devices such as the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and the first-generation iPad Mini. But the sudden release of the Evasi0n 7 jailbreak left MobileSubstrate in a broken state due to its lack of compatibility with 64-bit iOS devices.

Cydia Substrate, the latest MobileSubstrate update, adds 64-bit compatibility while also fixing problems experienced by users of 32-bit devices. What does this mean for tweaks and mods that rely on MobileSubstrate?

For iOS 7 users with 32-bit devices, tweaks that rely on MobileSubstrate should now work on devices running Cydia Substrate. For 64-bit iOS device users, they’ll have to hold out a bit longer. While Cydia Substrate added 64-bit processor support, developers still need to recompile their software to be compatible with 64-bit processors as well. Tweaks and mods that are being actively developed should see updates soon as developers work to make their tweaks and mods compatible with Cydia Substrate. But tweaks and mods that have been somewhat abandoned by their developers may be relegated to 32-bit devices, unless developers choose to eventually update their software to support ARM64.

Tweaks and mods that are still awaiting 64-bit updates include Saurik’s Winterboard theming app, among a slew of others. Though some tweaks, mods and apps are already seeing ARM64 updates such as NowListening, a mod that shows songs playing as a banner notification on iOS.

Cydia Substrate’s arrival is a welcome one, especially after controversy surrounding the sudden release of the Evasi0n jailbreak and the TaiG piracy dilemma marred the image of the jailbreak community for a brief time.

Version 0.9.5000 of Cydia Substrate (formerly MobileSubstrate) is now available through the Cydia repository on jailbroken iOS devices. Users of unofficial MobileSubstrate fixes should uninstall the fixes before updating to Cydia Substrate.
