In this week’s episode of “Modern Family,” the kids are all grown up. In an episode titled “The Day Alex Left For College,” the show focuses on how the children have evolved into their own unique individuals.

Luke has become a teenager and he’s already starting to look and talk like his friends. He is more interested in hanging out with his friends than with his dad, but Phil tries to bond with him anyway. He brings Luke to a new house listing that he’s in charge of, but Luke is obviously distracted by his friends’ invitations.

Eventually, Phil decides to let Luke be a teenager and allows him to have fun with his friends. Meanwhile, Claire is also struggling with separation anxiety. As the episode title suggests, Alex is moving into her college dorm.

Claire and Phil are devastated, but Alex is clearly excited. She’s finally going to be able to shine in an environment where she is surrounded by like-minded individuals. Haley drives her to her dorm, but Alex discovers that she’s ended up with an annoying roommate. She’s about to blow her top when Haley offers some unexpected words of wisdom about being stuck with an annoying roommate for most of her life.

Over at the Tucker-Pritchett household, Mitch and Cam are starting to feel the pressure of being under financial strain. When Mitch lost his job in Season 6, they decided to work together to get their situation sorted. Mitch decides to take on jobs sorting out dead people’s wills and estates. Meanwhile, Cam has started renting out the upstairs apartment that they bought when they thought they could afford it.

Eventually, both of them succumb to the pressure when they take Lily to a girls’ soccer game. They start arguing when Cam tries to undermine Mitch. They eventually iron things out when Cam reaches out and helps Mitch win the game.

Jay, Gloria and Claire arrived at the game with Manny and Joe. They had initially tried to get out of the activity but Mitch and Cam were not to be outsmarted. When all of their excuses ended up sounding lame, the group eventually went to the game to save face.

Just when they thought they had gotten away with their lame excuses, Joe blurts out that Gloria had shot Jay with a BB gun in the foot, in an attempt to get out of the game. Mitch is completely appalled that his dad would get shot deliberately just to avoid watching Lily's game.

Joe features in his first speaking lines in the series, and is already proving to be a great addition to the already hilarious cast. "Modern Family" airs every Wednesday night at 9:00 p.m. EDT on ABC.
