A Florida mother was accused of burning her son’s hand on a stove to discipline the boy for hitting other children.

Miriam Rebolledo, 29, who is a native of Colombia defended herself by saying it was her right to do so as a form of punishment for her 6-year-old son, claiming the boy was out of control and other attempts to correct his behavior were not effective. She was arrested Thursday on charges of aggravated child abuse.

Rebolledo had burned the child’s hand on the stove after a school employee told her the boy hit his classmates. According to various reports, she also feared her child would grow up to be a criminal if she did not discipline him.

“My son is so rebellious that he got to the point to kill an animal. What am I supposed to do? Stay home without doing anything for my son?" Rebolledo said in Spanish, according to report published in WPLG.

Rebolledo added, “I’m a bad mom, but they don’t know the truth. This is the kind of thing a mother has to do so that her son can grow up to be a good person tomorrow,” according to CBS Miami.

During the hearing, Miami-Dade County Judge Ariana Fajardo Orshan informed Rebodello injuring a child is not good parenting, according to the Fox News.

The judge said, “Maybe in Colombia it is okay to take the child and put their hand on a burning stove, but in the United States, it is not. … You have the cutest son. I met him this morning. He is very sad that he has to go to foster care."

CBS Miami reported Rebolledo was released Friday on $7,500 bond and the 6-year-old boy was placed in foster care.

In a similar incident, a 32-year-old mother from Florida was charged in February with aggravated child abuse for allegedly punishing her son by burning his chest with a clothes iron. Tamecha Jean had burned her 9-year-old son because he failed to show her his school work.

Jean claimed she was ironing clothes prior to the incident and had disciplined the child with a wheel, Fox31 reported. She added the child moved around a lot while being hit and might have accidentally burned himself on the iron.

In another incident, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, Florida, charged 28-year-old Derby Sanon with aggravated child abuse after she burned her 3-year-old son because the child wet his bed.
