March natural gas prices broke down below recent congestion overnight and registered their lowest level since December 28th. While the 6 to 10 day weather maps continue to indicate near to below normal temperatures out to February 16th, there remains some uncertainty over the 11 to 15 day maps that call for milder conditions. Meanwhile, heat-related demand for natural gas remains firm, with the latest demand forecasts from the National Weather Service that average 14.9% above normal this week, compared to 13% last week. The Commitments of Traders Futures and Options report as of February 1st showed non-commercial traders were net short 182,617 contracts, an increase of 9,704. Non-commercial and nonreportable traders combined held a net short position of 135,399 contracts, for an increase of 10,504 on the week.
