Platinum prices have posted moderate gains this morning but remain fairly close to the recent lows for the move. Some traders feel that platinum will get little support from news overnight that South African platinum mining output was down sharply in February versus year ago figures, as news of lower production doesn't seem to be as important as expectations for forward demand. With South African Impala charged with culpable homicide in a mining death from almost 5 years ago, further supply side issues might be expected during the near future. Sluggish investment demand expectations have some traders feeling that the platinum market needs to see a noted improvement in macro economic conditions to provide any lasting support for the market.
