October platinum has put together a sizable extension of the sharp gains seen during Thursday's trading session. With considerable global press coverage of the killings at a Lonmin platinum mining facility in South Africa, and with the shares of Lonmin under aggressive liquidation pressure this morning, there are rising concerns of sustained production losses throughout the platinum market. Some traders have projected a loss of 15,000 ounces of platinum production so far at the Lonmin facility, a major source of the 80% of world platinum production that originates in South Africa.
