If you're thinking about traveling outside of the U.S., you might want to choose your vacation carefully. Data.world and Priceonomics may help, as they recently teamed up to analyze the connections between American deaths abroad, U.S. State Department travel alerts and foreign touring.

Bottom line: Mexico, Mali and Israel have proven to be the most dangerous countries to visit in recent years. However, Americans were more likely to be killed in Thailand, Pakistan and Honduras.

Countries like Israel, Pakistan and Afghanistan were deemed to be dangerous mainly because of ongoing international conflicts, while places like Mali, Nigeria and Syria were found to be threatening due to terrorist attacks carried out by extremist groups including the Islamic State group and Boko Haram.

North Korea, on the other hand, was mostly dangerous to American travelers because foreigners could be detained for any reason — no matter how small — like the 21-year-old University of Virginia undergraduate student from Ohio who was arrested for stealing a political sign last January.

Below is a list of American civilians killed between October 2009 and June 2016, with Mexico again topping the charts with 598 deaths. This total includes homicides, executions and terrorist attack deaths.
