When is Mother's day? For the United States and 81 other countries, this year Mother’s Day is on Sunday, May 12. If you haven’t found a gift for your mother yet, consider these creative ideas and forego the traditional flowers and generic greeting card.

1. Hand-Crafted Jewelry
Being hands-on can be difficult sometimes, but mothers definitely appreciate it when thought is put into gifts. Making custom jewelry or finding jewelry on places like Etsy can go really far to show your mother you appreciate her.

2. Custom Photo Books

If there’s one thing my mother always appreciates, it's photos. Even when there are tons of cameras out at a party, she’ll always make sure she gets a picture to add to her ever-growing collection sitting on her home computer. Gather some of your old and new photos, scan the ones that aren’t digital and make a photo book. They look sleek and are a great way to bring those musty photo albums into 2013 with style.

3. Pastries

OK, I’ll admit this isn’t necessarily the most creative one on the list, but there are so many ways to be creative with food. You don’t need to spend tons on Red Velvet cupcakes, unless that’s what your mother loves. If that’s the case, go wild. If not, mix it up by trying different confections and pastries such as macarons, eclairs or tarts.

4. Chalkboard Painted Objects

Turn ordinary objects such as mason jars, coffee mugs turned pen holders and just about anything else you can think of into a writable surface for ideas. Write and decorate them using a chalkboard marker to avoid the mess, while adding a little flair to your gift.

5. Mother’s Day Brunch

Pamper your mom with a nice brunch featuring French toast, waffles, a variety of fruit, hash browns and omelets. Can’t cook? Not a problem. Take her out for brunch instead, leaving you one less thing to worry about.

6. If all else fails there’s this… [Warning: NSFW Language]

In all seriousness, I really hope you don’t actually use that option.

All in all, even after you’ve found that perfect gift, spend some quality time with your mother. That’s one of the truly best ways to show your appreciation, and among the best gifts you can give her.
