Motorola led Twitter followers on a scavenger hunt throughout New York City on Wednesday. The contestants vied for a chance win an invitation to an event, which will take place on Thursday, Aug. 1, at which the new Moto X phone will debut. Motorola Mobility, a Google company, has said that the event would be more personable than Apple's traditional on-stage announcements, which were popularized by Apple's Steve Jobs. The Moto X is advertised a highly customizable, and leaks have shown that the device will be offered in a multitude of customizable, colored backplates. Rumors also say the phone could come with backplates made out of wood and other materials, in addition to colored plastic.

Motorola tweeted a series of locations -- which came to six different areas around New Yor City. The first was the Manhattan High Line, a former elevated set of train tracks that was converted to a public park and "aerial greenway." Another location was the Nike store at 21 Mercer St., a high-end boutique where customers can design custom shoes, in a possible allusion to the new phone's colored backplates and rumored personalizable engravings.

The Moto X is expected to use Motorola's recently announced Motorola X8 Computing System, which uses multiple processors and hardware sensors to allow the phone to detect where it is and how it is being used. Motorola will introduce the phone tomorrow at 8 p.m. EDT. At present, there is no word on whether it will offer a live stream of the event. Motorola has updated its YouTube channel with the Moto X insignia, so content will likely be made available at some point on Aug. 1.
