Harry Treadaway as Brady
Hodges (Brendan Gleeson) challenges Brady (Harry Treadaway) to a face-to-face meeting in Season 1, episode 5 of “Mr. Mercedes.” Audience Network

Hodges and Brady continue to push each other’s buttons in Season 1, episode 5 of “Mr. Mercedes.”

According to the synopsis for next week’s episode of the Audience Network series, the cat and mouse game between Hodges (Brendan Gleeson) and Brady (Harry Treadaway) escalates.

In the trailer for episode 5, Brady hacks into Hodges laptop once again and torments the retired detective. Tired of playing by Brady’s rules, Hodges challenges the killer to meet up with him. “Let’s meet face to face, mano o mano,” Hodges tells Brady.

Brady seems open to meeting Hodges personally, but the computer technician makes it clear that he won’t hesitate to take the investigator’s life when that happens. “Truth be told, I’m just gonna kill you,” Brady says.

Apparently, Hodges isn’t the only one Brady wants to kill. As revealed in the trailer, Brady finally manages to buy the container of rat poison he failed to purchase last episode, and it appears that he’s going to use it to murder Jerome’s (Jharrel Jerome) dog.

At some point in the trailer, Hodges drives Jerome away, reminding him that it’s not safe for him to be hanging around with the detective. Does Hodges’ heightened concern about Jerome’s safety mean that the divorced father of one is privy to what Brady has done to Jerome’s dog?

Elsewhere in the episode, Deborah’s (Kelly Lynch) drinking almost causes an accident at the Hartsfield home. In the trailer, Brady — after hearing the siren of a fire truck — rushes into their house only to be welcomed by thick smoke.

Also in next week’s episode, Hodges finally has the opportunity to talk with Janey’s (Mary-Louise Parker) mother. Their conversation, however, doesn’t seem to end well as the episode logline describes the moment as “upsetting.”

Lou (Breeda Wool) also finds out about Ryan Springhill’s (David A MacDonald) death next episode. In the trailer, Lou thinks that Ryan’s death was an accident, but Brady tries to convince her that Ryan could also be murdered. “Maybe this wasn’t even an accident. Maybe this was a murder,” Brady says in the promo clip.

Meanwhile, Deborah thinks that Brady has been working so hard and needs a vacation. The killer, as expected, thinks that going on holiday isn’t a good idea.

“Mr. Mercedes” Season 1, episode 5, titled “The Suicide Hour,” airs on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 8 p.m. EDT on Audience Network. Watch the trailer below:
