A Moroccon immigrant attacked his sister-in-law for taking his wife to the beach. He was enraged because she dared to take his wife on the beach trip without his permission, a court heard on Tuesday.

Ismail Belghar allegedly slapped Canan Kokden across her face, called her a slut and held her over a car park railing when he noticed that his wife Hanife Kokden had sunburned shoulders.

The incident took place in 2009 in New South Wales, Australia, when Belghar apparently became furious that his wife had displayed her body on a beach, reported Mail Online.

According to Daily Telegraph, Belghar thought that he had absolute authority over his wife because of his religion and he found it objectionable that his wife went to the beach and displayed her body.

Belghar who has been married to his wife for 11 years was originally charged with attempted murder, says the report.

He called his sister-in-law a slut over the phone.

Belghar was given a trial by Judge Solomon two months ago with the judge sitting alone, after agreeing that he might not receive a fair trial with a jury, said the Mail Online report.

In light of the fact there has been adverse publicity regarding people who hold extreme Muslim faith beliefs in the community, I am of the view that the apprehension by (Belghar) that he may not receive a fair trial is a reasonable apprehension, Judge Solomon said.

But then the Crown appealed against the judge's ruling and claimed that if Belghar received this treatment, then every Muslim man would be entitled to the same.

The Court of Criminal Appeal agreed with the Crown and ruled for Belghar to be tried by a jury, said the report.

However, Belghar apologized to Kokden and avoided the hearing that was scheduled for this week. The charge of attempted murder against him was dropped and he will be sentenced at a later date. The prosecution, however, will reportedly seek a jail term.
