Sometimes, there’s no better food than Chicken Wings.

One of the more versatile foods with dozens of sauce and flavor options (honey barbecue, buffalo, garlic parmesan, sriracha, jerk, and fruit-glazed are only a handful of them), varied heat indexes (mild, classic, hot, extra-spicy), and more than one way to enjoy eating them (boneless or on the bone), chicken wings are a go-to option for appetizers, game day snacks and other celebrations for a reason. Thankfully, July 29 happens to be National Chicken Wing Day.

What is National Chicken Wing Day? According to the National Chicken Wing Day website, it’s a day celebrated annually, every July 29, after the day was proclaimed as such back in 1977 by Buffalo, New York Mayor Stan Makowski. The origin of chicken wings is often traced back to the city, with the story of Teresa Bellissimo, who reportedly made them on a whim at the Anchor Bar one night for her son and his friends, back in 1964. The result became a massive hit.

A fun fact the website shares about Chicken Wings is that they are one of the most popular foods in the U.S., with more than 27 billion total eaten back in 2013, with 1.23 billion of those being consumed only during Super Bowl weekend.

Thankfully in honor of the day, several restaurants are offering deals and freebies for Chicken Wing Enthusiasts who want to take advantage. There are also contests being run, which can allow fans of the treat to potentially win wings for a year as well.
