Millions of people across the U.S. are expected to bow their heads in prayer on Thursday to observe this year’s National Day of Prayer. The day, which isn’t a public holiday but was sanctioned by Congress more than 60 years ago, is held on the first Thursday of every May and is a time for people of all faiths to come together to pray and meditate.

The annual event dates back to 1952 when President Harry Truman signed a bill putting National Day of Prayer into law. This year’s theme, set by the National Day of Prayer Task Force, is “Lord, Hear Our Cry.” The group is based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and oversees thousands of prayer events across the country.

President Barack Obama is expected to make a few remarks Thursday in honor of the National Day of Prayer. “As we give thanks for our liberties, we must never forget those around the world, including Americans, who are being held or persecuted because of their convictions,” Obama said during last year’s prayer day. “Let us remember all prisoners of conscience today, whatever their faiths or beliefs and wherever they are held. ... And let us carry forward our nation’s tradition of religious liberty, which protects Americans’ rights to pray and to practice our faiths as we see fit.”
