On Friday, June 7, foodies across the country will recognize one of the most important days of the year: National Doughnut Day 2013.

It was back in 1938 when the Salvation Army created this joyous holiday in an effort to raise funds during the Great Depression. It also honored the “lassies,” as they called the female volunteers who supported the soldiers on the front lines during World War I, serving them delicious meals -- and donuts. Approximately 250 “lassies” provided assistance to American soldiers in France in 1917.

Now 75 years later, some of the country’s biggest doughnut chains are helping celebrate National Doughnut Day 2013 by offering sweet deals on this tasty American classic.

Dunkin’ Donuts

At Dunkin’ Donuts, customers will receive a free doughnut with any beverage purchase. The chain’s much-buzzed-about Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich also makes its debut on the permanent menu at more than 7,000 Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants today. The 360-calorie sandwich features bacon and a pepper-fried egg on a glazed yeast ring donut.

Krispy Kreme

If you consider yourself a doughnut connoisseur, visit the legendary Krispy Kreme Doughnuts on National Doughnut Day 2013 for a free doughnut of any variety. No purchase necessary.

Tim Hortons

National Doughnut Day 2013 is so epic that even Canadians are getting in on the fun. The Ontario-headquartered chain Tim Hortons is offering a free doughnut with any purchase at a Tim Hortons location in the U.S. on Friday, but be sure to print this Facebook coupon and bring it with you to redeem the deal.

Entenmann’s

Entenmann’s, one of America’s oldest baked goods manufacturers, will donate $1 to the Salvation Army for every person who “likes” the Entenmann’s Facebook Page from now through June 15. In addition, the company will be holding a National Doughnut Day 2013 event at Federal Plaza in Chicago. You can also check out their local bakery outlets in your neighborhood to see if they are offering any Dougnut Day specials.

LaMar’s Donuts

At each of its 28 locations in the United States -- in Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Tennessee – LaMar’s Donuts will celebrate National Doughnut Day 2013 by giving away one free doughnut per person, no purchase necessary. Plus, a portion of this week’s sales will be donated to The Salvation Army for the Oklahoma tornado relief effort.
