NATO says it has killed one of the most senior al-Qaeda figures in Afghanistan over the weekend.

Saudi-born Sakhar al-Taifi - the group's second highest ranking figure - was killed in an airstrike, the alliance said in a statement.

Taliban sources have denied the claim, saying al-Taifi left the area three months ago.
