Fitbit is trying to encourage video gamers by adding in-game rewards for those who wear its wearable. Fitbit announced a partnership with the NBA 2K17 , which lets gamers receive in-game boosts to their MyPLAYER - a custom character - if they meet their 10,000 steps for the day.

The partnership between Fitbit and game publisher 2K is great, especially if it will offer players in-game bonuses on NBA 2K17 for reaching specific goals with their Fitbit trackers.

Reaching 10,0000 steps per day, for example, will give access to a temporary boost to a player’s performance, including agility, dunks and layups.

“As a former video game industry executive, I’m excited to help shape the first-of-its-kind integration between a wearable and a console video game, motivating gamers of all ages to be more active throughout the day by giving them in-game rewards for their real-world fitness activity,” said Tim Rosa, Senior Vice President of Global Marketing at Fitbit. “This partnership speaks to the long history of innovation from both of our brands. We think it’s just the beginning of what’s possible as we create new ways to keep our community engaged and motivated to be healthier and more fit.”

With this integration, 2K is adding to the growing list of brands that are part of the Works with Fitbit program, which gives developers, brands and users a way to connect to the Fitbit platform to popular health and wellness apps, services, and now games will make it easier for consumers to reach their wellness goals.

The integration will be enabled on Nov. 29, just in time to burn off all of the calories from the holiday.
