To little surprise, Las Vegas oddsmakers have pegged the Golden State Warriors as the leading frontrunner to win the NBA title in 2016.

Fresh off their record-tying 72nd win of the season, the Warriors continue to lead the NBA title race as 1/2 favorites, well ahead of the San Antonio Spurs and Cleveland Cavaliers, both at 4/1, according to VegasInsider.com.

After that trio, there is a significant dip for contending teams. The Oklahoma City Thunder are the closest at 20/1 odds, followed by the Los Angeles Clippers at 40/1 and the Toronto Raptors at 50/1.

At the end of March, the Warriors stood out as a 5/7 favorite but they’ve since improved their chances of repeating as champions with their blazing sprint towards the NBA’s single-season record for most wins.

Led by point guard Stephen Curry’s 26 second-half points, the Warriors beat the Spurs 92-86 on Sunday to equal the 1995-1996 Chicago Bulls’ mark of 72 wins in a single season. The Warriors posted a 15-2 record in March, and while they lost to the Boston Celtics and the lowly Minnesota Timberwolves, Curry and Co. took the season-series with San Antonio, 3-1, suggesting they would win a seven-game series if the two sides meet in the Western Conference finals.

The Warriors will try to surpass the Bulls’ mark when they close the regular season at home against the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday. Golden State picked up a 100-99 win over Memphis on Saturday to set up their record-tying triumph over the Spurs, but even if Steve Kerr's squad fail to rewrite history their championship odds should stay the same.

The success against the Spurs, and two wins over Cleveland, make it easier for oddsmakers to favor Golden State. The Warriors notched an 89-83 win over the Cavs on Christmas Day and a few weeks later blasted the Eastern Conference favorites 132-98 behind Curry’s 35 points and a near triple-double by forward Draymond Green.

If oddsmakers are correct, Golden State will meet Cleveland in the NBA Finals for the second year in a row. Cleveland’s a 1/3 favorite to claim the East, with the Toronto Raptors listed at 7/1 odds.
